On June 24, 2009, the Chester County Historic Preservation Network (CCHPN) Volunteers Recognition Dinner was held at the Oxford Presbyterian Church. A tour of the Oxford Historic District preceeded the dinner. The CCHPN honored East Coventry, East Goshen, East Fallowfield, East Nottingham, Londonderry, Pennsbury, Thornbury, West Marlborough, West Nantmeal and West Whiteland Historical Commissions for completing their Historic Resource Atlas. Each atlas represents hundreds of dedicated volunteer hours.

The Historic Atlas Project’s primary goal is to build upon the 1979-1982 comprehensive survey of historic resources in Chester County that has become outdated. Trained volunteers catalog current historic sites, districts, and structures in Chester County’s 73 municipalities, and utilize state-of-the-art technology to do so. Since 2000, preservation planning at the municipal level in Pennsylvania has been desired. To efficiently and effectively identify resources that need protection, Chester County’s Historic Preservation Officer enlisted the efforts of the Chester County Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Analyst to assist in creating the series of atlases to meet this need.

To date, seventeen municipalities have completed their atlases. As a special thank you, local artist Ann Bedrick creates an original illustration of a township-selected historic property for their cover. Examples of her work are shown.

We are proud to announce that the Chester County Historic Resource Atlas Project was awarded a 2008 National Association of Counties (NACo) Achievement Award, which was highlighted at their 12th Annual Conference Awards Ceremony in Kansas City, Missouri. Each year, NACo reviews projects from all over the country to recognize a county’s hard work to promote quality, efficiency and responsive county government management and administration. Applicants must describe and state the need for their county-wide project, including the use of technology, costs, and its successes and worthiness. Another fiften atlases are expected to be completed in 2010.
